A Different Kind of Flower Shop
We’re not big on the standard dozen red roses. We do them if you ask, but we’d rather talk you into something better. Tipton Flower Shop has been crafting arrangements with personality since 2012—the kind of bouquets that make people stop and actually look instead of politely nodding. We start conversations with “what feeling are you chasing?” instead of “what color?” because the best arrangements capture a moment, not just a preference.

What Makes Us Different
Owner David Kinney started Tipton Flower Shop because the existing florists in town felt tired. He wanted to build something that felt alive. That meant refusing to stock carnations from importers, instead partnering with Indiana growers who actually care about what they’re growing. It meant designing with foliage first and flowers second—the stems that hold the arrangement together should be as beautiful as the blooms. It meant saying no sometimes. “This isn’t the arrangement for you” is something you’ll hear from us, and we mean it kindly.
We change our designs seasonally because flowers are seasonal. In winter, we lean into deep colors and sculptural branches. Spring explodes with garden flowers and herbs. Summer is abundant—dahlias, zinnias, things with personality. Fall becomes moody and warm. You can’t force a flower into the wrong season and expect it to sing.
Our Signature Collections
The Wildflower is our most-requested arrangement. It looks casual, like someone walked through a field with scissors, but it takes careful design. Lots of movement, lots of unexpected elements—maybe there’s a branch of hypericum berries, maybe there’s a dahlia leaning sideways because that’s where it wanted to go. Every version is different because we design around what’s fresh that week. People order it repeatedly and have favorite variations.
The Barn Bunch is our tribute to Indiana farmland—it leans into warm earthtones, uses native grasses, includes foliage that smells good. It’s what you’d see in a farmhouse kitchen. Romantic without trying.
Why Local Sourcing Matters
We work with two family farms within 20 miles of Tipton and one specialty greenhouse outside Indianapolis. You can taste the difference, we promise. When flowers are grown locally and harvested at peak bloom, they last longer and smell stronger. The farms know us—they set aside the best dahlias, the prettiest ranunculus, the greenery without blemishes. We know them—we know what their soil is like, what pests they manage organically, what they’re proud of. This relationship changes everything.
In 2018, during a late frost, our primary farm nearly lost their entire spring crop. We asked what we could do. Ordered arrangements entirely from their backup stock, wrote a blog post about why they matter, and donated part of our weekend sales to help with replanting. The relationship deepened. That’s what local sourcing really means.
Meet David & The Team
David designed everything himself for the first four years. Now he oversees design direction and sourcing while leading a team of three florists who’ve trained for at least two years before touching customer arrangements. His wife, Jennifer, manages operations and knows every regular customer by name. When you call with an order, she remembers what you sent last time and asks thoughtful follow-up questions. That attention doesn’t happen by accident.
Seasonal hiring brings in college students and people exploring floristry as a career shift. We’ve launched two people into professional design careers. That’s something we’re proud to say.
The Moment Everything Changed
In 2015, a woman came in asking for flowers to take to a nursing home. Her father was unresponsive after a stroke—hadn’t acknowledged anyone in weeks. She wanted something that might reach him anyway. David created an arrangement with hydrangeas he knew from his grandmother’s garden (a flower the woman’s father would recognize), mixed with fresh lavender, some blue delphinium, and unexpected pops of rust-colored celosia. She brought it to him. A week later, her father passed away. She returned to the shop with a photo of his face the day she brought the flowers. He was smiling. His first response to anything since the stroke. She hugged David in the middle of the shop and said thank you. That’s when everyone understood why this job matters so much.
Our Design Aesthetic
Natural, textured, alive. We favor soft color palettes with bold accents. Lots of greenery. Stems that breathe. We use what the season offers us—hydrangeas in summer, seeded eucalyptus year-round, ornamental grasses, branches, things with interesting angles. A Tipton arrangement shouldn’t look precious or formal. It should look like someone spent time thinking about you.
Our flowers actually smell. We use fragrant varieties (garden roses, freesia, lavender, herbs) as a baseline. If an arrangement comes through without scent, we’re rethinking it. Scent is half the gift.
What Customers Say
“I’ve been ordering from Tipton for three years. Every arrangement shows up smelling incredible and lasts forever. David somehow knows what I need before I tell him. I actually look forward to sending flowers because I know they’ll be special.” — Amanda H.
“We used them for our wedding in 2023. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were better than expensive florals we’d seen elsewhere. Felt personal, looked beautiful in every photo, and lasted beautifully. Worth every penny and then some.” — Marcus & Elena D.
“I sent flowers to my mom thinking it would be a standard florist arrangement. She called me back saying they’re the most beautiful thing she’s received in years. That was Tipton.” — Rebecca T.
Community First
We donate arrangements monthly to Tipton’s library, schools, and senior living facility. David teaches a “Build Your Own” workshop quarterly—$25 per person, materials included, all proceeds support Madison County Parks. We’ve hosted 8 workshops so far. Last one sold out. We’re planning to add more.
We also sponsor the local high school’s horticulture program with supplies and mentorship. If floristry interests you, we want to know.
